2012:
Some businesses begin with a business plan. Ours began with a flight to Bali.
What was meant to be a conference to recalibrate one business sparked the idea for an entirely different one. Somewhere between the conversations, the inspiration, and a fresh perspective, Scully Scooters was born.
It started informally in 2010 before becoming an incorporated company on 3 July 2012. We started with a single scooter, a dream to Get South Africa Moving, and a strong prediction of the rise of scooters, motorcycles and tuk-tuks (SMT’s) in South Africa.
Early backing:
Selected as a winner for Anglo American’s Entrepreneur Internship Programme, an early and significant validation for our mission to help alleviate poverty in our country, by teaching people how to ride a scooter and get a job. The Funding and Business Coaching pushed us ahead

Since day one, our mission has been to move the marker on social issues and help important causes find the momentum they need.
We’ve been doing it for 14 years, and now we’re going to share freely, what we’ve learned, our opinion on the current status quo of the industry and our roads, and an interesting economic consideration we believe needs more attention.
In 2017, Scully Scooters launched the first ‘Mother’s Milk on the Move’ project’ Premature Babies that are fed their mother’s milk have a significantly higher chance of survival. Many mothers live far distances from where their babies are incubated. We solved this problem by safely transporting the mothers milk from their local clinic to their babies at the Neonatal Unit at Groote Schuur.
Our Founder, explains the goal and ethos of Scully Scooters and Scully Academy in an ENCA news feature. Getting unemployed youth into jobs and work opportunities is why she started this business. Making sure that people are skilled and competent on the roads is the work that we must all be responsible for. Safer roads mean more opportunities for everyone.
